The Challenge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I was brought into a proposal team at Honeywell to support the design of a government RFP response for an international customer. The engineering was complete. The technical content had been reviewed and approved. One requirement was clear from the start: the text could not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I saw the proposed cover. It featured the U.S. military. For a proposal being submitted to a government customer overseas, it immediately felt out of place. The document wasn’t technically wrong. It simply reflected the perspective of the people who created it instead of the people who would receive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I raised the concern with the Proposal Manager and Proposal Director. Rather than dismissing it as a design preference, they gave me the freedom to develop a different approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Insight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

People begin forming opinions long before they read the first sentence. Paper size. Photography. Color. Spelling. Examples. None of those change the engineering. All of them communicate whether a document feels like it was created for its audience or simply exported to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal wasn’t to make the proposal look different. It was to make it feel intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Approach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The engineering remained untouched. Everything around it was reconsidered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal was redesigned for local production using the international A4 paper standard instead of U.S. Letter. Rather than mechanically resizing the existing document, the publication was rebuilt page by page to preserve typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy. That process increased the final document by approximately a handful of pages while maintaining a professional reading experience. American spelling conventions were localized to British English, while the engineering language and business writing style remained unchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cover was completely reimagined. Honeywell proposals traditionally relied on black, white, or occasionally gray covers. For this proposal, those conventions were intentionally broken. Research suggested a different visual direction, leading to a red-forward cover featuring aircraft familiar to the customer’s own military rather than U.S. military imagery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those recommendations weren’t based on instinct alone. They were validated through research and reviewed with Honeywell employees who had lived in or had close cultural ties to the target region. Their feedback helped refine the final publication before production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Outcome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The proposal became more than a technically accurate response. It became communication that acknowledged its audience. The engineering never changed. The communication did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the proposal process concluded after my departure from Honeywell, I can’t speak to the contract award. What I can say is that the project fundamentally changed how I thought about communication. Sometimes the most important message isn’t the one written on the page. It’s the one your audience receives before they read a single word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal balanced technical accuracy with cultural nuance for an international, multi-stakeholder audience, exactly the kind of challenge most teams get wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
