It starts in a training room.

For this project, the goal was to prepare hundreds of hourly team members for one of Universal Orlando Resort’s signature holiday events. The information itself wasn’t especially unusual: operational procedures, guest interactions, and event expectations. The audience was. Some employees had worked the event for years. Others were seasonal hires experiencing it for the first time. For a few, this was their very first job. That meant the training couldn’t assume everyone spoke the same language: the language of workplace experience.

The script, developed by the training team, already contained the right information. My role wasn’t to rewrite the procedures. It was to translate them into an experience that felt approachable, memorable, and worth paying attention to. Adding to the challenge, every creative decision also had to satisfy the presentation and storytelling expectations of a globally recognized licensed intellectual property while successfully completing a formal brand review process.

The Insight

The event itself was built around storytelling. The training should be too.

Instead of presenting procedures as a series of disconnected instructions, the content could invite employees into the world they were about to help create. Storytelling wasn’t there to make the training “cute.” It gave information context. It created curiosity. It made operational standards feel like part of something bigger than a checklist. Combined with plain language, thoughtful pacing, and smaller, easier-to-digest sections, the experience became less about consuming information and more about understanding it.

The Approach

The project began with a simple question:

How do you make mandatory training feel like the beginning of the experience instead of a prerequisite for it?

Rather than creating another slide deck, the presentation was structured like a storybook. Information was introduced gradually instead of all at once. Technical language was replaced with conversational language wherever possible. Large blocks of text became short moments that built naturally into the next idea. The audience wasn’t expected to adapt to the training. The training adapted to its audience.

Every decision balanced four priorities:

Operational accuracy

Audience accessibility

Storytelling

Licensed IP compliance

The objective wasn’t to simplify the work. It was to make the work easier to understand.

The Solution

The final deliverable was a fully branded, partially interactive PowerPoint that combined operational instruction with storybook-inspired storytelling. Appropriate and on-theme multimedia was used throughout to reinforce the experience, giving the training the same texture and atmosphere as the event it was preparing people for.

Although the visuals were governed by strict licensed intellectual property standards, the communication strategy focused on something much broader. Creating an experience people wanted to participate in. Because of licensing restrictions, the presentation itself can’t be shared publicly. Fortunately, the most interesting part of the project wasn’t the slides. It was what happened after they were finished.

The Outcome

The presentation successfully completed the required licensed IP approval process and became part of the seasonal training program. Leadership’s first reaction said a lot with very little.

“It was stinkin’ adorable!”

The trainers told an even better story. Several shared that they had never been this excited to deliver the annual training. Even though the sessions took place before the holiday season officially began, some arrived wearing Christmas sweaters and decorated the training room before participants walked in. Nobody asked them to. They simply wanted the room to feel like part of the story.

For me, that became the project’s most meaningful measure of success. The presentation had done more than communicate information. It had created enthusiasm in the people responsible for sharing it.

The Takeaway

Good communication isn’t measured by how much information you present. It’s measured by how little effort people have to spend understanding it. Storytelling isn’t just a creative technique. It’s a communication strategy. When people understand the why behind what they’re learning, they’re far more likely to engage with the what. That’s true whether you’re onboarding seasonal employees, introducing organizational change, or helping leaders explain complex ideas. The audience may change. The principle doesn’t.

What Changed

The training became something trainers wanted to be part of, not something they had to sit through, leadership called it “stinkin’ adorable.”

Let’s Talk

Good communication doesn’t make people work harder to understand. It works harder so people don’t have to.

If that’s the kind of work you’re trying to do, we should talk.

Photo by Theme Park Tourist, licensed under CC BY 2.0.

A seasonal training program that used storytelling to make operational learning more engaging without compromising clarity or brand standards.
