For tens of thousands of frontline hospitality team members across U.S. theme parks and resorts, representing more than half of the park workforce, that wasn’t the case.

Many spent their day serving guests instead of sitting behind a computer. None had regular access to corporate email and most worked in constant motion. They represented an extraordinary range of backgrounds, experiences, technical confidence, and learning preferences. Their attention was divided across guests, operations, safety, and the pace of a busy day. While supporting cybersecurity communications at NBCUniversal, an opportunity emerged to extend existing awareness efforts beyond traditional office-based communication channels.

The challenge wasn’t creating more communication. It was creating communication that fit the reality of how these teams actually worked.

The Insight

The answer wasn’t to bring frontline employees into the existing communications ecosystem. It was to bring cybersecurity to theirs.

Rather than expecting employees to seek out information, we looked for ways to integrate cybersecurity awareness into the places they already visited, the conversations they were already having, and the communication channels they already trusted. We met the audience on their turf.

The Approach

That thinking became The Unphishables, a self-contained awareness campaign designed specifically for frontline hospitality teams. The concept intentionally avoided existing entertainment IP and licensed characters. Instead, it adopted a clean, approachable visual identity with relatable photography, plain language, and simple messaging. This allowed the campaign to remain focused, avoid confusion with guest-facing brands, and move through review and future iterations more efficiently.

Rather than creating another standalone campaign, the goal was to strengthen communication channels that already existed. The campaign was designed as a connected system of touchpoints that could appear throughout an employee’s workday, including posters, digital signage, onboarding materials, leader conversations, and other frontline communication opportunities. Cybersecurity employees started showing up too, participating more regularly in company-sponsored events built for these frontline teams.

The objective wasn’t to teach people how to protect the company. It was to help them build cyber hygiene habits that would protect both the company and themselves.

The Outcome

The result was a communication strategy designed around audience behavior instead of organizational convenience.

Instead of measuring success by email opens or clicks, the campaign focused on earning attention a few seconds at a time. Five seconds became ten. Ten became thirty. Repeated exposure through familiar channels was designed to reinforce practical behaviors without requiring employees to change how they worked simply to receive the message.

The project also demonstrated that meaningful communication doesn’t always require building something entirely new. Sometimes the greatest impact comes from understanding the audience, respecting their environment, and making better use of the communication channels already in place.

What changed

The campaign created a practical way to reach more than half of the park workforce through channels already built into their workday, instead of relying on corporate email they did not regularly use.

Let’s Talk

People shouldn’t have to change the way they work just to receive important information. The responsibility belongs to the communicator. The most effective communication doesn’t begin with the channel. It begins with the audience.

If that’s a gap you’re trying to close, we should talk.

Extending cybersecurity awareness beyond the office by designing communication around people instead of platforms.
